User Centric Monitoring relies on identifying network traffic by user, not IP just address, to significantly improve network visibility and reduce time to resolve issues across the network.
The network exists to serve users, to facilitate communication between users and applications. There is much talk of monitoring ‘user experience’ but from a visibility perspective we still seem to be restricted in identifying network traffic by IP address, not by user.
User Centric Monitoring goes beyond traditional visibility tools to associate traffic with an actual user not just an IP address. When anomalous activity is identified in the network this allows quick and easy identification of not just ‘what’ is generating traffic, but more importantly ‘who’.
To illustrate let’s look at a quick example. It is relatively easy to identify large traffic downloads, say streaming video like NetFlix, across the network. Most monitoring products can easily provide the source IP address of the offending machine. This is a start, but in the doesn’t necessarily help the network support in pinpointing the precise location of the device or more important who actually initiated the download. User centric monitoring provides the username associated with the IP address to resolve this issue.
This is great for network visibility, but User Centric Monitoring goes much further than just associating usernames with network flows. If we step outside of pure network flow data to produce an enhanced data set that includes data from other sources like server logs, vulnerability management and threat detection systems we can profile an individual’s entire online activity and experience from both a performance and security perspective.
User Centric Monitoring presents is a significant improvement over traditional monitoring techniques. Managing the network by user, not just IP address, allows for greater insight to both performance and security issues, reducing the time and effort required to resolve issues and maintain network performance and security.
